Jennifer Slobodian, Ph.D.

Director of Academic Solutions

Jenny Slobodian earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of South Carolina and is a certified ELA teacher. During her time at USC, Jenny taught Spanish and World Literature courses, bringing together her love of languages and literature. As the manager for the Learning Solutions Specialist Team at EMC School, Jenny is responsible for the creation of sales presentations, the outlining of training procedures, and the identification of key strategies for content and technology development from a teacher’s perspective. Jenny has presented at many regional and national conferences, including the NECTFL, SCOLT, and ACTFL.

Karen Carrier

Learning Solutions Specialist

Karen Carrier taught English Language Arts for 12 years in Arkansas before moving to Texas and teaching for 6 more years. She has teaching and coaching experience at the middle and high school levels in both rural and urban settings. She has served as a curriculum writer and mentor teacher and has also taught Project Based Learning as a STEM facilitator.  While in Arkansas, she was named junior high teacher of the year in her hometown of Forrest City and served on two Benchmark testing committees for Reading Content and Writing with the Arkansas Department of Education. She has given presentations at the school, district, and state levels on important topics such as independent reading for students, writing strategies, high yield strategies, state test scoring, and feedback in the classroom. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Arkansas State University and her master’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. As a Learning Solutions Specialist, Karen is responsible for providing in-services, webinars, and ongoing professional development for teachers.

Stacy Courtright

Learning Solutions Specialist

Stacy Courtright has been working in education for the last 18 years. She has a B.A. in Anthropology and her M.Ed. with an ESL endorsement from Arizona State University. She began teaching diverse populations and coaching teachers at the Osborn School District. Stacy is a Fulbright scholar, and her study of “North American Identity” allowed her to bring deeper meaning to her community and students. Stacy has been working with educational technology companies for the last 8 years as an instructional designer, data coach, and professional development provider. Most recently, Stacy co-presented at the 2017 NCTE conference on sessions featuring “Teachers as Writers and Teachers of Writers” and “Reclaiming ELL Voices in the Classroom.”

Tracy Maxwell

Learning Solutions and Content Specialist

Tracy Maxwell has worked with hundreds of teachers, reading coaches, and administrators across the nation in her 20+ years of educational consulting. She has worked closely with schools in implementing school improvement plans in the areas of reading and math by providing professional development and facilitating data meetings. Tracy has worked with at-risk students in Detroit Public Schools, has been a financial supporter of Birmingham City Schools teacher training National Board-Certified Teacher initiatives, and actively served as organizer and facilitator of “World Math Day” in Montgomery County Schools. Before pursuing a career in education, Tracy was an on-air reporter for a NBC affiliate in Lima, Ohio, and an ABC affiliate in Lansing, MI.

Janet Boring

Learning Solutions Specialist

Janet Boring earned her undergraduate degrees at Geneva College in Pennsylvania and worked in the business arena utilizing her Spanish skills for 11 years in Logistics, SAP implementations, and training and development. She received her Master’s degree in Spanish from the University of Pittsburgh prior to moving to Texas and teaching high school Spanish for 6 ½ years before joining EMC. She also currently serves as an adjunct Spanish professor at Lone Star Community College and as an AP Spanish Language reader. As a Learning Solutions Specialist, Janet is responsible for providing in-services, webinars and ongoing professional development for teachers, presenting EMC products and services at sales opportunities and conferences and developing educational content materials for EMC world language programs. Janet has presented at several regional and national conferences, including TFLA and ACTFL.

Liz Sacco

Learning Solutions Specialist

Liz Sacco was a French and Spanish teacher and World Language Department Supervisor for 31 years in upstate New York. She has been an exam writer for New York State Regional LOTE Exams and presenter for 11 years for the New York State “Regents Review Live” broadcast. She has written curriculum and taught Spanish for correctional officers, social workers, and medical personnel at a local community college. Liz has also taught ESL and worked as a medical and court interpreter. For 11 years she has worked as College Supervisor of student teachers for SUNY Oneonta and Cortland and has been a reader for the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam for 12 years. She has been awarded “Rotary Teacher of the Year” and “Oneida County Teacher of the Year.” Liz has been presenting and training for EMC School for 9 years and has given workshops at NYSAFLT, NECTFL, MaFLA, FLAVA, CLTA, CSTFL, SCOLT, SWCOLT, TFLA, AWLA, and ACTFL. She strives to provide teachers with research-based best practices in the teaching of World Languages and culture.

Michael Griffin

Learning Solutions Specialist

Michael Griffin taught Spanish and French for 16 years before joining EMC. He has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and in both public and private school settings. He worked as a scoring leader for the Praxis French exam and was also an AP Spanish Language reader. As a Learning Solutions Specialist, Michael is responsible for providing in-services and ongoing professional development for teachers.  He also develops educational content materials for EMC world language programs. Michael has presented at many regional and national conferences, including NECTFL, CSCTFL, and ACTFL.

Jennifer Kilmore

Learning Solutions and Outreach  Specialist

Jennifer Kilmore has 15 years of experience as a French teacher, curriculum developer, teacher trainer, and professional development presenter. She has worked both in traditional classroom and distance learning settings. Jennifer currently serves as a member of the Leadership Initiative for Language Learning with ACTFL and is the President for the Arkansas Foreign Language Teacher's Association as well as Past-President of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French. As a former Arkansas World Language Teacher of the Year and a SCOLT Teacher of the Year finalist, Jennifer has been a leader and activist in language pedagogy locally, regionally, and nationally. Jennifer is a contributing writer for T'es branché? and a Learning Solutions and Outreach Specialist with EMC School.

Debora Stonich

Language Arts Consultant, Dallas/Fort Worth

Debora Stonich began her career in education in San Jose, California and happily continued it in Texas. During her 25 years in education she has been a classroom teacher, English department head, Director of ELAR Curriculum for two school districts in Texas, and a University instructor. She has been a champion for providing strong literacy programs for all students and creating engaging professional development for educators to assist students reach their full potential. She is currently the business owner of ESL for Professionals and Graduate Students located in Allen, Texas, and teaches English to International Professionals. Throughout her career, she has previously worked on editing and reviewing projects for ELAR and ESL textbooks during three different Texas State wide adoptions.

Johnnie Joplin

Johnnie Joplin graduated from North Texas University with a Master's Degree in Education. During the last 30 years, Johnnie has held positions as Master Teacher, Educational consultant, Senior sales representative, VP of District Partnerships Chief Sales and Marketing office and VP of Urban Initiatives. Her career has involved a combination of Educational knowledge to call on Superintendents, Curriculum Directors, Bilingual Directors, Federal Program Directors and site-based Principals and Teachers. She has implemented the planning, coordination, and dissemination of textbooks, provided excellent follow-up service, and conducted training over many adopted programs for teachers.

Shelley Wright

Language Arts Consultant, East TX

Shelley Wright is an educational consultant with an expertise in language and literacy for ELLs. She earned a master’s degree in Bilingual/ESL Education and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a major in Dual Literacy. During the past 20 years, Dr. Wright has worked with school districts across the state of Texas, offering professional development in language acquisition through differentiation. She is a trainer on the ELPS, and teaches and designs programs for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of Dual Literacy and English language instruction for ELLs. Her background brings personal experience of being a language learner together with her research and teacher training to offer a unique insight into language and literacy.

Joanna Jackson

Language Arts Consultant, Dallas/Fort Worth

For over 40 years, Joanna has worked as a Texas educator, mostly in Richardson, Texas. She’s taught English Language Arts in grades 6-12 and English composition classes at Collin College. She has a MA in English, BA in English and Art, and Texas Teaching certification in Secondary English, Art, Reading and Marketing. Joanna continues to work as a RISD consultant by mentoring teachers, administering assessments, and working with students as a career advisor.

Sharon Chapman

Sharon Chapman is the owner of Chapman Tutoring and Consulting in McAllen where she provides professional development, instructional coaching and tutoring. While she tutors all ages and subjects from Kinder to 8th grade, she specializes in comprehension strategies and writing. Miss Chapman’s professional development sessions focus on culturally responsive teaching practices, collaborative learn strategies and school culture. She has a master’s degree in educational administration and has worked as a teacher and administrator for over 30 years in South Texas.

Ysau Flores

Language Arts Consultant, Austin/San Antonio

Ysau Flores is an educational sales professional with over 25 years of experience working with educators and publishers in the Central/South Texas area. He has earned a M.Ed. in Education Administration from Abilene Christian University and a B.S. Ed. in Spanish from McMurry University. Flores has worked as an instructor, coach and department head for McMurry University and the Abilene Independent School District, and as a bilingual consultant for Education Service Center in Texas. He now lives in San Antonio, where he is very active within his educational community. He has served as a board member for St John School and the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities, as well as president of the San Antonio Youth Centers.

Eric McKnight

Language Arts Consultant, West TX

Eric McKnight worked in the Lubbock Independent School District for 36 years before retiring in 2011. He earned a M.Ed. in Education Administration from Texas Tech University and a B.S. in Physical Education/Health from Texas Tech University. McKnight worked as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal at the Junior High and High School levels. Eric lives in Lubbock, Texas with his wife Cheryl who is a retired Speech Pathologist.

David Irons

Texas Sales Manager

David Irons comes from a long line of Texas educators and can frequently be seen at Irons Middle School in Lubbock Texas where his father, Ed Irons, was superintendent of schools in the 1970s. David graduated from Texas Tech University with an education degree and then served as a high school teacher and basketball coach in Lubbock ISD and Levelland ISD. At EMC, David oversees the instructional materials adoption process and a team of 15 sales and curriculum consultants. David lives in McKinney Texas with his wife, Karen, who is a preschool teacher and instructional leader at the Early Childhood School in Frisco ISD.

Debbie Secrist

VP of Sales & Marketing 

Debbie Secrist is a long-time literacy educator, a former first grade teacher, and reading specialist with an M.Ed. in reading education. She taught both in the US and overseas in France and for the Department of Defense in Schools in Germany. Her career in educational publishing includes 30 years in roles that serve teachers and their students with reading and writing workshop, as well as supporting students in underserved communities who struggle with reading difficulties. She believes that every child can be inspired to learn the joy of reading!

Cathy Winsor

Texas Adoption Consultant

Cathy Winsor was a “Master Teacher” and M.Ed. Reading Specialist in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District and an Associate Consultant for Harris County Department of Education. She also trained in the New Jersey Writing Project in Texas. At EMC, Cathy uses her educational expertise and her 33 years of publishing experience to serve as a TX Adoption Consultant. Cathy also serves as Program Chair for her Garden Club and is on the board of directors of the Bay Harbor Improvement Association in Galveston, Texas.

Eve Myers has worked with Texas literacy educators for almost 30 years and is currently the Texas Language Arts Specialist for EMC. After teaching at both the high school and middle school levels, Eve has worked in educational publishing for both print and technology companies, and is committed to bringing the best instructional solutions to Texas educators. At EMC, Eve works with editorial and marketing to ensure alignment to Texas curriculum, assessment, and accountability needs.
